Sun and Moon Pendant (red) - Gilded wood lacquerware jewelry from Japan

This pendant crosses ancient Japanese traditional woodworking techniques with modern design. An abstract Sun and Moon pattern has been boldly placed on this lacquered wood pendant. Comes with a sterling silver chain.

Two traditional Japanese techniques are used in the creation of this piece. The first is the Japanese guilding technique known as "maki-e". The silver and gold patterns were applied this way.

The second technique is the lacquering of the wood. In Japan this lacquering technique is known as "urushi" which is the Japanese name for the lacquer tree. The natural sap of this tree is used in its creation.
